When was the last time you updated your CV? As students, it can be easy to forget about keeping this vital document updated...but it should be updated on a regular basis! Did you know that the ASHP website has its own CV Resource Center? This website is a great tool if you are looking for extra guidance on developing your CV - check out the link below when you get a chance. ASHP also has a CV Review Program where you can submit your CV online to be critiqued by experienced ASHP members. The fall deadline has already passed, but there will be another program in the spring. Also, don't forget to utilize professors and pharmacists you may work with - they are wonderful resources as well!

These are great resources! I think having the example resume is very helpful. It is nice to see one all laid out for us.

When doing my own, it was hard to stay on the 1 to 2 full pages that the Career Center advises, especially when adding in experience, involvement, and rotations. I almost feel that maybe we are a profession that can't help but have longer resumes.

    Anyone else feel this way?

Pharmacists: how long was your resume?

If you are responsible for reviewing them, do you look down on resumes longer than 1-2 pages?

Hey All, Usually a resume is 1-2 pages.  CVs are longer. I do not look down on CVs longer than 1-2 pages.  I expect them to be longer - more like 6-8 pages.  I update my CV at least yearly, or whenever I need to submit my CV.  CVs are also commonly submitted for speaking engagements and other professional events. Hope this helps! maari

    Thanks for the reply, Maari!

    To you and other pharmacists:

-What are the key components you look for on a CV? What stands out to you most?

-Are there any tips or pieces of advice you would like to share with students regarding CVs and/or letters of intent?

It is really important that letters of intent and perhaps your summary statement on your resume/CV match the goals of the organization you are applying.  Your letter of intent should change based on the site you are applying. The CV generally will stay the same.

I like to see a well-balanced CV - a publication and posters section and a presentation section are important.  Highlight accomplishments and experiences that are above your peers.

Consistent formatting and style is also important.  This is baseline, but if it's not well-done it could be immediately discounted.
